I found the solution at:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/forums\/t\/515490\/windows-doesnt-boot-black-screen-with-blinking-cursor\/\">http:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/forums\/t\/515490\/windows-doesnt-boot-black-screen-with-blinking-cursor\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use an XP install disk for the same sp installed on the failing hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>Quote from comment that did the job:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is possible that your boot.ini is corrupt. Try the following:<\/p>\n<p>In Recovery Console get to the C:\\ prompt, not C:\\Windows. Then type the following<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>attrib-h boot.ini\u00a0 &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>attrib-s boot.ini\u00a0 &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>attrib-r boot.ini\u00a0 &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>del boot.ini\u00a0 &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>bootcfg\u00a0 \/rebuild\u00a0 &gt;enter\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Edit: There is a space between bootcfg and \/rebuild<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will ask to add installation to boot disk. Press Y<\/p>\n<p>It will ask to enter a load identifier. Type: Microsoft Windows XP Professional<\/p>\n<p>Under enter OS load options type:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \/fastdetect\u00a0 \/noexecute=optin (space between \/fastdetect and \/noexecute=optin)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>finally type:<\/p>\n<p>fixboot\u00a0 &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>exit &gt;enter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reboot and see if windows loads.
